No. 11 Huskies Take Care Of Harvard 4-2 In Late Saturday Night Consolation Back Draw

SEATTLE - No. 11 Washington men's tennis (5-1) completed its three-day run through the USTA/ITA National Team Indoor Championships late Saturday night, defeating 14th-seed Harvard 4-2 in the consolation back draw at the Nordstrom Tennis Center on the UW campus.
After suffering a heart-breaking first round loss to No. 7 Mississippi Thursday night, the Huskies bounced back with a pair of wins in the consolation draw Friday and Saturday, giving them a 2-1 record in the tournament and improving their all-time record in three National Team Indoor appearances to 5-4.
Top-seeded Illinois and No. 6 seeded UCLA battle for the tournament championship at noon today.
Washington opened the match in the hole versus Harvard, as the Crimson claimed the doubles point. David Lingman and Jonathan Chu posted a comeback win over the Huskies' 11th-ranked duo of Alex Slovic and Alex Vlaski, 9-8. At No. 2 doubles, Mark Riddell and Brandon Chiu defeated UW's Christoph Palmanshofer and Peter Scharler, 8-6. The Huskies salvaged the third doubles match with Daniel Chu and Nick Weiss defeating Jack Li and Chris Chiou, 8-5.
The Huskies came back to win four of five singles contests, including the match-clinching win from UW freshman Daniel Chu at No. 4 singles. Chu took care of Cliff Nguyen in straight sets, 7-6, 6-4. Also picking up wins for Washington were Slovic at No. 2, Scharler at No. 5, and junior Scott Felsenthal at No. 6. Alex Vlaski's match at No. 1 with David Lingman was not finished. Vlaski came just shy of a win, leading 4-6, 6-0, 5-1 before play was suspended.
Washington will play host to the USTA/ITA National Men's Team Indoor Championships again in 2006 and 2008.
The Huskies remain at home next week, hosting Portland, Friday, Feb. 13, at 4 p.m. and UC Santa Barbara, Saturday, Feb. 14, at 2 p.m.
