SEATTLE, Wash. - The 10th-ranked Washington men's tennis team (6-1) did not drop a match or a set at any position in registering a 7-0 blanking of the Portland Pilots Friday night at the Lloyd Nordstrom Tennis Center. After going 2-1 against some of the nation's toughest competition at last weekend's USTA/ITA Team Indoor Championships, Washington was in no danger of suffering a letdown. The Huskies maintained their perfect 43-0 mark against the Pilots.
All-American junior Alex Vlaski (Belgrade, Yugoslavia), ranked second in the nation, hit his way past Portland's Roman Borvanov at No. 1 singles with a 6-1, 6-4 victory.
The Huskies have received outstanding contributions from three freshmen singles players this season and Friday's match was more of the same. 53rd-ranked freshman Alex Slovic (Pancevo, Yugoslavia) was nearly perfect, dropping only one game at No. 2 doubles to pick up his seventh dual win against no defeats, while fellow freshman Chris Floyd (Mercer Island, Wash.) was victorious at sixth singles, running his record to 3-0 in the dual season. Combined with the 6-0 mark of Daniel Chu, who sat out against Portland, the three freshmen have compiled a dual record of 16-0, and all three have yet to lose a single set.
Also contributing straight set singles wins were a trio of juniors; 61st-ranked Christoph Palmanshofer (St. Georgen, Austria) at No. 3 singles, Peter Scharler (Salzburg, Austria) at fourth singles and Scott Felsenthal (Memphis, Tenn.) at No. 5 singles.
The Huskies clinched the doubles point on an ace from Vlaski who teamed with Slovic to defeat Portland's Borvanov and Besharat, 8-4, at No. 1 doubles. Senior Nick Weiss (Santa Monica, Calif.) teamed with freshman Michael Ricks (Orinda, Calif.)for the first time this season, and the newly formed pair hit their stride after trailing 7-4 at No. 3 doubles. Weiss and Ricks strung together five straight games to defeat the Pilots' Redpath and Sithole, 9-7. It was the first career dual win for Ricks.
Washington returns to action tomorrow, Feb. 14 at 2 p.m., squaring off against No. 64 UC Santa Barbara at the Lloyd Nordstrom Tennis Center.
