SEATTLE, Wash. - Capping off its opening eight-match homestand, Washington's 10th-ranked men's tennis team notched another convincing victory, 6-1, over U.C. Santa Barbara Saturday evening at the Lloyd Nordstrom Tennis Center. Washington (7-1) continued their excellent singles play, taking five of six matches to hand the 64th-ranked Gauchos the loss.
Second-ranked Husky junior Alex Vlaski (Belgrade, Yugoslavia) took on Alex Anselme at the top singles slot. Vlaski overcame a slow start to defeat 98th-ranked Anselme 1-6, 6-0, 6-3. The second and third singles positions were dominated by Washington as 53rd-ranked freshman Alex Slovic (Pancevo, Yugoslavia) won 6-3, 6-1 at No. 2 and 61st-ranked junior Christoph Palmanshofer (St. Joergen, Austria) easily stopped UCSB's Mike Placek, 6-1, 6-1 at No. 3. Also picking up a straight-set win was junior Peter Scharler (Salzburg, Austria) at fifth singles.
Slovic and fellow freshman Daniel Chu (Vancouver, B.C.) both remain undefeated in their dual careers after Chu won a close third set tiebreaker at No. 4 singles. The two have gone 15-0 in their young careers and Slovic has yet to drop one set. Freshman Chris Floyd (Mercer Island, Wash.) however had his unbeaten streak snapped at 3-0 as he fell in three sets to UCSB's Nick Edlefson.
The Huskies took the doubles point on quick wins from Slovic and Vlaski at No.1, and Palmanshofer and Scharler at No. 2. Scott Felsenthal (Memphis, Tenn.) and Nick Weiss (Santa Monica, Calif.) completed the doubles sweep with a 9-8 (4) win at third doubles. Weiss has gone a perfect 6-0 in doubles this year with multiple teammates.
Washington now must say goodbye to the Nordstrom environs for the first time this year as their next eight matches will come on the road, taking them into Pac-10 play in March. First up for UW is a trip down the coast to play at #39 Fresno State on Friday, Feb. 20 at 2 p.m., and at #28 San Diego on Saturday, Feb. 21 at 2 p.m.
