Arizona improved to 2-0 in this year's WCWS. Nineteen of the 21 WCWS champions have won the first two games in the tournament.

Washington senior shortstop Jaime Clark was hitting .500 (9-for-18) in the postseason with seven RBIs and three home runs entering today's game. Clark went 0-for-3 today, dropping her batting average to .428 for the postseason.

Washington fell to 13-9 all-time in the WCWS, while Arizona is now 45-18.

Washington owns a 15-40 all-time record against Arizona, who took two of three from the Huskies during the Pac-10 regular season. The Huskies were one of two teams to knock off the Wildcats in conference action. The Wildcats and Huskies have played five times at the WCWS with UA winning four of five.

Washington sophomore catcher Kristen Rivera's solo home run to tie the game in the fourth inning put her in a tie with Arizona's Lovieanne Jung for the NCAA lead in home runs with 25. Rivera also passed Huskies legend Jenny Topping (2000) for the single-season UW record in home runs. Rivera (41) is just two home runs away from No. 2 Jennifer Cline (43, 1996-99) on the Washinton career home run list.

The ball continues to fly out of the ballpark at a record pace in the 2003 WCWS. The previous record for home runs in any of the 22 tournaments was seven. The 2003 field hit seven long balls on the first day of competition and Rivera's blast today set a new mark.

Arizona freshman pitcher Alicia Hollowell struck out the side in the bottom of the second, giving her 366 on the season and tying Wildcat legend Jennie Finch's single-season record. Hollowell then struck out Aimee Minor to lead off the third inning and take sole possession of the Wildcat single-season strikeout record. Hollowell finished the day with 13 strikeouts giving her 374 on the season and marking the 13th time she has recorded double-digit strikeouts. Hollowell has now fanned 26 batters in two WCWS games.

Wildcat Lovieanne Jung was 2-for-3 today and improved her career WCWS batting average to .388 (7-for-18). Jung also upped her 2003 postseason average to .722 (13-for-18). Jung ranks ninth on the UA all-time RBI list with 81. She needs three RBIs to move up to No. 8 where Toni Mascarenas stands with 84.

Arizona junior catcher Mackenzie Vandergeest tied a WCWS record with two sacrifice hits, which was set most recently by Casey Acree of Oklahoma State in 1998. Arizona also tied the WCWS record for sacrifice hits with five, which was set by UCLA in 1983 (that contest went 17 innings).

Arizona advances to Game 11 Sunday at noon and is one win away from Monday's championship game. Arizona will face the winner of Game 9, which begins at 6 p.m. on Saturday.

Washington faces the winner of Game 8 between UCLA and UL Lafayette at 8:30 p.m. on Saturday. Washington lost to UCLA in all three Pac-10 meetings by a cumulative score of 26-2. UL Lafayette owns a 5-4 series advantage against Washington but the Huskies have won two straight, including a 3-2 decision in 2002.
