Jennifer Cline is in her third season as a full-time member of the Husky staff. The former UW standout catcher was on the inaugural Washington softball team in 1993 and played an integral part in the program's quick rise to excellence. She served as a student assistant coach in 1996-97 and now helps with coaching hitting and the catchers, as well as with administrative duties.
Cline started in all but three of the first 264 games in Washington's history, playing in 262 overall, and her name is etched throughout UW and NCAA record books. She earned NSCA second team All-America honors as a senior in 1996 and was a member of the Pac-10's first team in 1995 and 1996 and second team in 1994. Cline picked up Player of the Week honors both nationally (Feb. 26, 1996) and in the Pac-10 (Mar. 21, 1995).
The four-time team captain owns 11 UW records, including five career marks, four seasonal standards and two single-game records. Her 43 career home runs is a Husky high, as is her RBI (227), slugging percentage (.632), walks (175) and on base percentage (.485). A cornerstone in the Washington program, Cline led the team not only statistically but by her example and determination as well. She earned Husky Rookie of the Year and co-Player of the Year honors in 1993, and finished her career with another team Player of the Year award.
Cline is a regular in the NCAA record book as well. She has been walked more times than all but one person in NCAA history, stands fifth on the all-time RBI list, and is ninth in home runs. Her 71 RBI as a senior ties her for 20th on the national season chart.
Cline played professionally last summer for the Virginia Roadsters with former UW teammates Sara Pickering and Leanne Rosser, helping the Roadsters finish third in the Women's Professional Fastpitch League. She was the seventh pick overall, taken by the Tampa Bay FireStix, in last summer's Women's Pro Softball League Elite/Supplemental Draft for the 2000 season.
In the summer of 1997, she helped the USA National Team win the gold medal at the qualifying tournament for the Pan Am Games in Colombia. USA Softball also named her to Level II of its elite athlete pool, which represents the United States in international competition leading up to the 2000 Olympic Games in Sydney. The Westminster, Calif., native earned her bachelor's degree from UW in sociology in 1997.
