WASHINGTON HEAD COACH June Daugherty
General Remarks: "It was a good win. We knew Notre Dame was coming in here with an enormous amount of talent. Obviously our rebounding was a big difference and helped us get into our running game and get some easy things. Post wise we did a pretty fair job on their front guys which was a huge concern. I'm really pleased defensively and with our rebounding to get this big win."
On controlling tempo of game: "It goes back to what we're trying to establish defensively. They came up and started affecting tempo a little bit, but I thought for the most part we handled their pressure pretty well. It was something we've been working on, so it was good to see.
On team poise: "I thought our whole team showed a lot of poise. Everyone knew this was a big game, it's been circled on my calendar since the summer. These are games you work hard in the offseason for. Our freshmen have an enormous amount of confidence. Our seniors showed a lot of poise and they learn from them."
On winning 250th game: "You get there from the players that play for you and the staff that works with you, so it's a credit to everybody.
On Lalum not playing much in first half: "She was in foul trouble. It hurt us a little bit offensively and defensively. In the second half she came back and played huge. Also, the other post players were able to step up and get some very valuable experience against a very good front court."
On being overmatched inside: "Besides how big they are, they are very skilled. They pound it inside and if they have something they'll take it, but they're very good passers about finding Joyce and the other kids outside. We were able to match them points in the paint, even without Andrea, so I'm not that concerned about it."
On concerns for Colorado: "Snow. We want to get everyone rested up. I'm sure they'll try to get into our heads about the higher altitude. We know we can win on the road, we did it early in Hawaii and it just keeps getting better and better."
GUARD Giuliana Mendiola
On Cameo Hicks: "I love her intensity, she's very fierce and won't back down. Cameo showed that tonight, she can take it to the hole, she can drive real well, especially with her left hand, and it's hard to stop her, she is very quick. I also think that she's a great rebounder for a guard. She has a good nose for the ball and she is a great anticipator. She played a great game today and I'm very proud of her, the whole team is proud of her."
On the hot shooting of Cameo Hicks: "She was hot, she was definitely hot. We went to her a little more, they were denying me the ball so we went the other way and she took full advantage of that. I think she was driving hard to the hole, getting rebounds, scoring, she was on fire and it was pretty obvious that she had a great game."
On her shot at the end of the 1st half: "Coach called a play, but we were kind of confused, so he just told me to run off the pick, and that's what I did. I read the defense and saw an opening, and it worked out.
On the nationally televised game: "I think it gave us some motivation, I know our team was really excited and we don't play on national television very often, so we were excited. I knew that my whole family was watching at home, so I wanted to do the best I could.
On their current winning streak: "We don't really think about the streak, we just want to win basketball games, at home we play on a whole different level, so hopefully we can continue that type of play.
GUARD Cameo Hicks
On her performance tonight: "I just really wanted to go in there and play hard. Play clean up as much as I could on the offensive and defensive boards, and just help my team out in any way possible.
On her confident play:"Probably because I have a lot of confidence from my teammates and coaches, so knowing that I don't have a lot of pressure on me, it makes it a lot easier and I am a lot more comfortable on the floor.
FORWARD Andrea Lalum
On her second half performance: "I just wanted to come in there and help the team as much as I could, which you can't do sitting down. I really wanted to get out there, but I was really proud of the freshman for stepping up. They didn't let anything go while I was sitting on the bench. I just wanted to get out there, rebound, and contribute however I could.
On the win over a big program: "This is a great win for us but I think that we are just looking forward to our next game. We leave for Colorado tomorrow, so we are just looking ahead to that game."
