Postgame Quotes
WASHINGTON HEAD COACH June Daugherty
General Remarks: "It's a W. It wasn't very pretty, but I thought in the second half we got after it defensively. Rebounding was a big concern going into the second half, but we did a better job boxing out and not giving up second shots. I'm excited to see the bench come out and play as well as they did, especially Jill Bell, 16 rebounds in 22 minutes in unbelievable. Jill was also more patient offensively, it was good to see her getting more confidence as a scorer. It wasn't easy to watch, but we battled and we're ready for the next one."
On spreading out scoring: "We're going to take what the defense gives us. We had some people who were wide open on shots tonight. We tried to get the ball inside early and Andrea, Breanne, and Maggie really responded to that. That's a good sign for our team that we're getting a good inside-outside balance."
On lack of sharpness:"We came off finals week and our girls are very academically inclined, so that took a lot of energy. Hopefully this was the preparation we needed for the next game coming up."
On defense helping rebounding: "It helps us to establish a weak-side box out and that's usually where we get hurt. It also almost always gives us a triangle which helps with our pressure and drops and rotation. The defense has worked good for us so far and is helping a lot with the rebounding. Those were two improvement areas and it's working."
On strong second half: "We turned it up defensively. We knew our effort wasn't where it needed to be. We gave up way too many offensive boards in the first half. Rebouding helps you get in your running game and that's when we get fun to watch."
WASHINGTON PLAYER Andrea Lalum
On the game: "We need to clean up our system out there. We came out with intensity at the beginning and then we just slowed off real quick. I think that we need to start off strong and keep it all through the game. We never got into our system and so we need to work at it."
On having six blocked shots: "I don't really try to block shots, because that's when I get into foul trouble. Tonight they opened up a little too much and I was able to get there and that's how our defense is set up, for me to be there."
WASHINGTON PLAYER Jill Bell
On having so many rebounds: "I didn't realize how many rebounds that I had tonight and I just tried to go after every rebound. The coaches have emphasized rebounds and defense and it worked out in tonights game."
On getting ready for this game: "Practice was intense this week and we wanted to get ready for tonight and for Texas Tech Friday."
