Washington Men's Tennis Loses 5-2 to Third-Ranked UCLA

SEATTLE, Wa. - The No. 33 Washington men's tennis team lost a 5-2 conference match against the No. 3 UCLA Bruins this afternoon in the Nordstrom Tennis Center. The Huskies are now 16-5 overall and 2-3 in the Pac-10, while UCLA improves to 17-3 and 4-0 in conference play.
UW's Dillon Ruby (Westlake Village, Calif.) earned his 15th dual win on the year and one of two Washington points today, with a 6-1, 6-1 convincing defeat of Alberto Francis in the No. 6 singles position. Also victorious was No. 46 Alex Vlaski (Belgrade, Yugoslavia) as he rebounded from a loss in the second set to defeat No. 102 Jean-Julien Rojer, 6-3, 6-7, 6-3.
In other singles action, UW was not as successful. No. 68 Matt Hanlin (Birmingham, England) was defeated by 10th-ranked Tobias Clemens in straight sets, 6-1, 6-1. Christoph Palmanshofer (St. Georgen, Austria) went head to head with No. 15 Marcin Matkowski and was defeated by the Bruin, 6-2, 6-1.
Junior Ari Strasberg (Ramat-Hasaron, Israel) was dominant in his first set, but could not hold on as Erfan Djahangiri defeated the Husky, 3-6, 6-2, 6-2 in No. 4 singles. Freshman Peter Scharler (Salzburg, Austria) was also successful in his first set with a 6-1 defeat, but lost the next two sets, 2-6, 2-6 to UCLA's Lassi Ketola.
In doubles play, Washington lost all three matches and dropped the doubles point to begin the match. Hanlin and Ruby, playing in the No. 2 slot against Clemens and Ketola, lost their match 8-4 to drop to 14-5 overall this season. On the top court, Strasberg and Vlaski were also defeated 8-4 by Rojer and Matkowski, while UCLA duo Francis and Djahangiri took care of Palmanshofer and Scharler, 8-4.
The Huskies will face 10th-ranked USC in Pac-10 action tomorrow, Sat., April 12 at Noon. The match will take place at the Quillian Stadium, weather permitting.
