SEATTLE - California pitcher Jocelyn Forest struck out 14 and allowed just one hit as the eighth-ranked Golden Bears defeated 10th-ranked Washington, 4-1, Friday in Pac-10 softball action at Husky Softball Stadium. With the loss, the Huskies dropped their fourth straight game to move to 32-13 overall and 1-5 in conference play, while the Golden Bears improved to 39-12 and 5-2 in the Pac-10.
UW junior Jaime Clark (Tustin, Calif.) broke up Forest's no-hit and shutout bid with her 15th home run of the season, a line-drive four bagger to straight-away center field to lead-off the bottom of the seventh.
Clark reached base in each of her previous at-bats with a pair of walks. Sophomore rightfielder Courtney Jeffries (Eugene, Ore.) was the only other Husky player to reach base in the game, drawing a walk with two outs in the second inning.
The California offense, meanwhile, broke through with the first run of the game in the top of the fourth when Kaleo Eldredge, who reached base on an error, scored on a fielder's choice by catcher Courtney Scott.
The Golden Bears increased their lead two innings later as third baseman Candace Harper singled and then scored when teammate Veronica Nelson hit her ninth home run of the season to make the score 3-0. Cal would later add another run in the same inning after UW reliever Ashley Boek (Redding, Calif.) walked leftfielder Kristen Bayless with the baes-loaded.
Boek was the last of three UW pitchers on the day, with starter Tia Bollinger (Santa Ana, Calif.) taking the loss to fall to 14-7 in 2002, before giving way to freshman Leslie Scott (Edmond, Okla.) in the top of the fourth.
Forest moved to 18-7 overall with the win, increasing her season strikeout total to 252, tops in the Pac-10 Conference this season.
The Huskies will look to get back in the win column Saturday with the first of a two-game series versus No. 3 Stanford. Saturday's game is set to begin at 2 p.m., while the two schools will play again Sunday at 1 p.m., at Husky Softball Stadium.
