Volleyball Drops First Match Of The Year To Texas-San Antonio

SEATTLE - Stacy Schmidt's 24 kills led host Texas-San Antonio to a 15-13, 15-12, 6-15, 15-8 victory over Washington in non-conference volleyball action Tuesday in San Antonio, Texas. With the loss, the Huskies fell to 3-1, while the Roadrunners improved to 3-1.
The Huskies were led offensively by junior Lisa Underhill's (Vista, Calif.) and sophomore Paige Benjamin's (Redmond, Wash.) 17 kills. Benjamin's 17-kill performance was a career best, while Underhill hit .469 for the match, recording her 17 kills on 32 attempts with only two errors. Sophomore setter/opposite Gretchen Maurer (San Clemente, Calif.) tallied her first career triple-double, finishing the match with 11 kills (career best), 41 assists (career best) and 12 digs. Junior Allison Richardson (Hemet, Calif.) also had her third straight double-double, adding 11 kills and 13 digs.
Roadrunner Schmidt also led on defense with a game-high 20 digs to go along with her 24 kills. Teammates Katy Risinger (15 kills, 11 digs) and Tamara Luckemeyer (12 kills, 10 digs) both had double-doubles.
Washington outhit (.263 to .241) and outblocked (9-6) Texas-San Antonio, but was unable to pull out the victory in the two schools' first ever meeting.
The Huskies continue their Texas trip with the Longhorn Classic at the University of Texas-Austin, September 8-9.
