SEATTLE - Senior Tami Bennett scored twice within the opening seven minutes Friday to break the school scoring record and lead the ninth-ranked Washington women's soccer team to a 7-0 victory over Gonzaga at Husky Soccer Field.
The Huskies completed the non-conference portion of their schedule with a 9-1 record, having outscored opponents 35-11. Bennett scored her team-leading ninth and 10th goals of the season, pushing her career total to 28. She eclipsed the previous UW scoring record of 27 established by Tara Bilanski (1992-95).
Bennett opened the scoring 50 seconds into the game on a 12-yard volley off a cross from junior Caroline Putz. She nailed the record breaker at 6:42, accepting a pass from senior Malia Arrant and flicking it past the oncoming goalkeeper from 15 yards out.
Also a prolific prep scorer, Bennett completed her career at Seattle Christian High School with a Washington state record 152 goals. That mark was surpassed last spring by the 166-goal total of her sister Melissa Bennett who is now a freshman on the UW squad.
Arrant notched the third UW goal on a 10-yard header off a cross from Katie Goodeve. Erin Otagaki's 12-yard looper over Gonzaga goalkeeper Tara Curtis accounted for the fourth Husky tally.
Senior Theresa Wagner also scored two goals for Washington, increasing her career total to 22. Wagner's 18-yard blast at 29:45 gave UW a 5-0 halftime advantage. After a goal by sophomore Vanessa Pierce at 68:10, Wagner capped the scoring on a 25-yard liner just inside the right post at 85:06.
Sophomore goalkeeper Hope Solo (Richland HS) and senior Leslie Weeks combined to record the save. Solo started in goal and made one save during the first half. Weeks recorded one second-half save. Curtis registered seven saves for Gonzaga (3-7) which was outshot 36-4 by the Huskies.
The Huskies play an Alumni game Saturday at 2 p.m. They begin Pacific-10 Conference play on Friday night at Husky Soccer Field against 10th-ranked Stanford.
