Seattle - Senior midfield Mark Hogenhout (Olympia, Wash.) curved a free kick into the net in overtime to lift the Washington men's soccer team to a 2-1 upset over sixth-ranked Cal State Fullerton in front of 661 fans in the final game of the Nike Husky Classic Sunday.
The upset gave Washington the tournament title, as the Huskies went 2-0 for the weekend after defeating Rhode Island Friday night. It was the first Husky Classic title for UW since 1996. Washington improves to 5-3-0 on the season while Fullerton, ranked sixth in the latest coaches poll, entered the tournament undefeated and leaves with a record of 6-2-0.
Fullerton's Duncan Oughton put the Titans on the board first, just before halftime, when he took an unassisted shot from the right side at 43:11. Washington responded swiftly in the second period, evening the score when Ben Somoza (Edmonds, Wash.) sent a pass to Bryn Ritchie (Medford, Ore.) who then flicked a header to Zach Kingsley (Spokane, Wash.), for the goal at 50:59. Hogenhout connected on a free kick into the upper right hand corner of the net at 101:42 to win the game for the Huskies.
Washington took 18 shots in the game, to Fullerton's 12 and the Huskies had 10 corner kicks to CSF's three. The Titans were whistled for 31 fouls while UW had 20.
"This was a big, big weekend for us," said Husky head coach Dean Wurzberger. "We played two high quality games, where we fell behind early, and came back to win on both occasions. It was important to rebound after our loss to Santa Clara last week and I was happy with our effort today. We were dominating a lot of areas but not getting the goals. (at halftime) I told the team, `we need to keep doing what we're doing, but need to finish off our chances.' They stayed determined. We took a big step this weekend and it gives us great momentum heading in to the Pac-10 season."
Rhode Island and Portland played to a 2-2 tie after two overtime periods in the first game of the day.
The Huskies return to action Sunday, Oct. 1 for the first-ever Pacific-10 Conference men's soccer game, versus Oregon State at Husky Soccer Stadium. Game time is 1 p.m.
