Seattle - The Washington men's soccer team came from behind on a pair of goals in the second half to defeat Rhode Island, 2-1, in the first round of the Nike Husky Classic in front of 522 fans Friday night.
The Huskies, who picked up their first come-from-behind victory, improve to 4-3-0 overall and Rhode Island drops to 5-3-0.
The Rams scored early in the first half on an unassisted goal by Nicholas McCreath at 18:25 into the game. Husky junior Zach Kingsley (Spokane, Wash.) put Washington on the board at 59:30 when he took a shot near the left post that was deflected by the URI goalkeeper. Bryn Ritchie assisted on the goal.
Kai Carroll (Eugene, Ore.) put the game winner on the board at 84:26, when he sent a header in off a pass from Ben Somoza (Edmonds, Wash.).
Washington outshot Rhode Island, 16-8, and had a 7-4 advantage in corner kicks.
"We played with emotion tonight," said UW head coach Dean Wurzberger. "It was more what we are used to seeing from the team. Talk about a big win. To come out on top of a game like that is great. It's nice to finally put some goals on the scoreboard and it was extra nice to pull back for the win, after being down. Rhode Island will be in the playoff hunt at the end of the season. They are a good team, so it was a nice win for us."
Portland won the first game of the tournament earlier in the evening, 2-1, over Cal State Fullerton. It was the first loss of the season for the Titans, who along with Portland, are ranked No. 5 in the latest Soccer Times poll.
The Nike Husky Classic continues with two more games Sunday. Rhode Island and Portland face each other at 11 a.m., followed by Washington and Fullerton at 1:15 p.m. Both games take place at Husky Soccer Field.
