SEATTLE - The University of Washington volleyball team closed out the 2000 Comcast Invitational Saturday by defeating host New Mexico 15-5, 11-15, 15-13, 15-12 in Albuquerque, N.M. With the win, the Huskies moved to a perfect 3-0 record and earned at least a share of the tournament title.
Washington used another balanced attack to hand the Lobos their first loss of the season. Tournament MVP junior quick hitter Lisa Underhill (Vista, Calif.) continued her hot hitting by tallying 12 kills to go along with six blocks and a .417 hitting percentage. The Huskies, however, were led offensively by senior opposite Emily Seacat (Ridgefield, Wash.), who reached double-digit kills for the third straight match with 19.
Sophomore Gretchen Maurer (San Clemente, Calif.) continued to show-off her all-around game for the UW by recording a career-best 30 assists, 16 digs and five blocks, while junior Allison Richardson (Hemet, Calif.) added her second straight double-double of the season with 17 kills and 12 digs. Sophomore Paige Benjamin (Redmond, Wash.) also was first on the team in blocks for the second straight match with seven.
The Lobos received a well-rounded effort as four players reached double-digit digs and three recorded double-digit kills in the match, which lasted over two and a half hours.
Joining Underhill on the all-tournament team was Portland State's Stacy Ball, Stanford's Sara Sandrik and Ashley Ivy, Drake's Stacie Kocourek and New Mexico's Vanessa Shields and Amy Amundson. Underhill hit .471 overall in the three matches.
New Mexico will face third-ranked Stanford, who is 2-0 in tournament play, in the tournament's final match Sunday. Should the Cardinal win, they would share the tournament title with the Huskies as both would finish with a perfect 3-0 record.
The Huskies continue their trip through the Southwest when they face the University of Texas at San Antonio on Tuesday, Sept. 5 at 7 p.m.
