Volleyball Opens Conference Play With Three-Game Loss To #7 UCLA

SEATTLE - The University of Washington volleyball team (4-3) began its 2000 Pac-10 Conference schedule by being overpowered Thursday night by the seventh-ranked UCLA Bruins at Pauley Pavilion in Los Angeles, Calif. The Huskies fell to 4-3 overall and 0-1 in the Pac-10, while the Bruins improved to 6-3 and 1-0 in conference play with the 15-8, 15-0, 15-12 victory.
The Huskies, who were led by sophomore Paige Benjamin's (Redmond, Wash.) seven kills, were held to a season low -.010 hitting percentage. Junior setter Britni Churnside (Eugene, Ore.) had one of the bright spots for the Huskies, recording 18 assists and 12 digs on defense.
UCLA junior Kristee Porter had a game-high 14 kills, while teammate setter Erika Selsor contributed 37 assists.
The Huskies will continue their trip to Los Angeles Friday night with another Pac-10 match versus sixth-ranked USC at 6 p.m.
