Volleyball Downs Portland State In 2000 Season Opener

SEATTLE - The University of Washington volleyball team opened its 2000 campaign by overpowering Portland State Friday morning, 15-0, 15-7, 15-6 at the Comcast Lobo Invitational in Albuquerque, N.M. With the win, the Huskies moved to 1-0 overall, while the Viking dropped to 0-1.
The UW got 10 kills apiece from juniors Malena Thompson (Santa Fe, N.M.) and Lisa Underhill (Vista, Calif.) and senior Emily Seacat (Ridgefield, Wash.). Underhill, a honorable mention Pac-10 selection in 1999, posted a team-high .571 hitting percentage, tallying her 10 kills on 14 attempts with just two errors. Junior Allison Richardson (Hemet, Calif.) also tied her career high for blocks in a match with a team-best six, while sophomore setter/opposite Gretchen Maurer (San Clemente, Calif.) had 26 assists to go along with three service aces.
As a team, the Huskies posted a .393 hitting percentage, including a perfect .667 (6-0-9) mark in the 15-0 game one win. Portland State, which was led by Stacy Ball's seven kills, hit .010 as a team.
Washington will be back in action Saturday with two more matches versus Drake (10 a.m.) and host New Mexico (7 p.m.) as the Comcast Lobo Invitational continues.
