SEATTLE - Junior midfielder Caroline Putz scored the lone goal in the 36th minute, lifting the Washington women's soccer team to a 1-0 upset over 17th-ranked Brigham Young on Tuesday in the first ever night game at Husky Soccer Field. The Huskies had lights installed during mid-August, enabling them to play home night games for the first time in their 10-year history.
Washington (2-0) snapped a nine-game winless streak against ranked opponents, winning for the first time since a 5-0 victory over No. 17 UNC Greensboro on Sept. 26, 1997.
The game-winning goal, a 12-yard boot from the left side of the goal at 35:10, was particularly rewarding for Putz. She hails from Bountiful High School, located within 70 miles of the BYU campus. Putz was the Utah state player of the year in 1996 and 1997 as well as a two-time Parade All-American.
Katie Goodeve (Eastlake HS) set up the goal with a long free kick that Tami Bennett (Seattle Christian HS) headed to Putz for her third goal of the season.
Sophomore Hope Solo (Richland HS) recorded seven saves to preserve the shutout. Jennifer Waldron saved six shots for Brigham Young (1-1) which outshot the Huskies 22-11.
After trailing 1-0 and being outshot 6-5 in the first half, the Cougars applied constant pressure in the second. BYU outshot Washington 17-5 after halftime, including several dangerous chances.
"This was a huge win for us," exclaimed UW head coach Lesle Gallimore. "We've needed a win over a ranked team to put us over the hump and hopefully this will do it for us. Caroline (Putz) scored a good goal for us and Hope (Solo) made some great saves to stop them from tying it."
Washington plays its next seven games on the road, beginning Friday at San Francisco. The Huskies visit No. 2 Santa Clara on Monday.
