SAN FRANCISCO - Sisters Tami and Melissa Bennett each scored a goal Friday night and Malia Arrant distributed two assists, helping the Washington women's soccer team secure its best start ever with a 3-1 victory over San Francisco at Negoesco Stadium.
The Huskies (3-0) have won the first three games of a season for the first time in the 10-year history of the program. Washington defeated Eastern Washington 8-0 on Saturday and upset 17th-ranked Brigham Young 1-0 on Tuesday.
Tami, a senior, scored her team-leading fourth goal on a header off a cross from Arrant at 20:20. It was Tami's 22nd career goal, drawing her within five of Tara Bilanski's (1992-95) school scoring record of 27.
Melissa, a freshman, picked up a rebounded shot and fired it into the net at 49:28 for her second goal of the season. She is the all-time Washington state prep scoring leader, amassing 166 career goals at Seattle Christian High School to eclipse the previous record of 152 established by Tami.
Junior Gina Brewer (Fife HS) tallied the final UW goal at 71:10, converting a pass from Arrant.
Sophomore goalkeeper Hope Solo (Richland HS) recorded two saves and held the Lady Dons (0-3) scoreless before departing in the 75th minute. Senior Leslie Weeks played the final 15 minutes in goal for Washington.
Rebecca Shook spoiled the UW shutout bid at 87:46, blasting a volley past Weeks off an indirect free kick from Christina Byers. That was the first goal allowed this season by the Huskies, snapping a 267-minute scoreless streak. Stephanie Beall had four saves for USF which was outshot 15-5.
In the midst of a seven-game road trip, the Huskies remain in the Bay Area to play at third-ranked Santa Clara on Monday.
