LOS ANGELES - The No. 1 Huskies scored two runs and sent eight batters to the plate in each of the first two innings to jump ahead of No. 3 UCLA early and coast to a 4-0 win over the Bruins on Wednesday. Washington takes the series with UCLA, 2-1, and improves to 55-6 overall and 15-3 in the Pac-10. The Bruins fall to 36-11-1 and 11-7 in the conference.
Jamie Graves retired 16 batters in a row after allowing leadoff Amanda Freed a single, and finished retiring 21 of the 24 Bruins she faced, striking out 10. Graves improves to 24-3, while UCLA's Stephanie Swenson suffered her first loss in 11 decisions. She allowed just two hits but walked or hit nine batters and the Bruins commited five errors.
Rosie Leutzinger was hit by a pitch to lead off the game and advanced to third on two wild pitches, which helped Kelly Hauxhurst earn a walk. Hauxhurst stole second and drew an errant throw from the catcher to allow Leutzinger to score. Jenny Topping was intentionally walked and Kim DePaul drew yet another walk to load the bases. Jennifer Spediacci singled to left field to bring Hauxhurst around.
In the second frame, Erin Helgeland reached first on one of five Bruins errors, and Leutzinger pushed Helgeland forward on a fielder's choice. Jaime Clark sacrificed them both forward and Topping drew another intentional walk before DePaul and Spediacci each were hit by a pitch to score Helgelandand Leutzinger.
UCLA pushed a run across in the seventh inning off a double and a long single but could not mount a comeback.
