SEATTLE (AP) - Eugene Costello, playing his first game for Texas-El Paso, scored 26 points as the Miners beat Washington 73-61 on Tuesday night.
The guard, a first-team Junior College All-America last season after averaging 22.8 points for Midland College, was 6-of-16 from the field and 12-of-13 from the line. Costello scored 17 points in the second half.
UTEP has won 12 of its last 13 openers and is 56-24 overall in its first outings of the season. Washington's six-game victory streak in openers was snapped.
Brandon Wolfram added 21 points and nine rebounds for UTEP. Wolfram, the second-leading scorer of the Western Athletic Conference last season with a 20.7 average, riddled the Huskies' defense with numerous baskets inside the paint.
The Miners led by as much as 15, but the Huskies closed to 63-59 with 2:32 remaining. UTEP pulled away in the final minutes.
Washington's Will Perkins had 15 points and 10 rebounds.
