SEATTLE - The Washington men's soccer team narrowly avoided its fourth-straight overtime game, with the game-winning goal coming in the 87th minute to down cross-town foe Seattle Pacific in front of 1,373 fans at Husky Soccer Stadium. UW improves to 5-3-2, while SPU falls to 7-2-1.
Sophomore Bryn Ritchie headed in a free kick from classmate Benjamin Somoza at 86:34 to break the scoreless tie. Washington outshot Division II's seventh-ranked squad 11-2 and had a 5-1 corner kick advantage. The Husky win prevented SPU coach Cliff McCrath from recording his 500th career victory.
"They've proven to be a tough opponent," UW head coach Dean Wurzberger said. "This was a big game for them. We were hoping for more goals, but they have a good team and will go far in Division II."
