SEATTLE - It took five extra minutes, but the Washington men's soccer team handed head coach Dean Wurzberger his 100th win with the Huskies by downing No. 15 Cal, 2-1 in overtime, on Friday at Husky Soccer Field. The win, UW's third straight, was its first against a ranked opponent this season and raises its records to 8-4-2 overall and 3-0 in the MPSF Mountain Division.
The Huskies host Stanford on Sunday at 2 p.m. in a match which will be replayed by Fox Sports Net on Thursday, Oct. 28, at 8 p.m.
After a scoreless first half, Cal opened the scoring at 52:29. UW goalkeeper James Dickinson was drawn out of the net, and Kendall Simmonds passed off to Chris Roner, who punched it in. Less than six minutes later, senior Wes Hart netted the equalizer, heading in a cross by sophomore Billy Sleeth at 58:14 for his third goal of the season.
Both keepers made two saves in the second half despite several opportunities by both squads, sending the game into extra minutes. It marked the sixth overtime game for UW this season, the most since 1990. But sophomore Benjamin Somoza slid a Cal clear into the upper right corner of the goal at 94:57 for his third game-winner of the season and his second in three games. UW is 3-1-2 in overtime bouts.
Dickinson, with three complete-game wins in league play, made six saves on the day in his fourth start of the season. UW outshot the Bears 17-9 and held a 9-4 corner-kick advantage.
"This was a hard-fought game, a big win for us over a nationally ranked opponent," Wurzberger said. "This puts us in a great position for Sunday. Our sights have been on the NCAA tournament since the beginning, and now we're starting to move toward that. I'm proud of the legacy we've built here since 1992."
Washington is vying for its fifth-straight NCAA tournament appearance and sixth since Wurzberger's arrival in 1992.
