PULLMAN, Wash. - Despite a career match from senior Kristina Laffling, the Washington volleyball team saw its losing streak increase to five matches as the Huskies lost a five-game marathon to Washington State Friday night at Beasley Coliseum. Game scores were 11-15, 15-10, 15-11, 13-15 and 15-9.
Laffling was only one block short of the first triple-double of her career with 26 kills, 23 digs and nine blocks. The 23 digs were only one short of a career-high, as was the blocks total. Sophomore Lisa Underhill added 20 kills and nine blocks for Washington.
The Huskies fell to 6-11 overall and 2-7 in the Pac-10 while Washington State rounded out the first run through the league with a 9-8 overall mark and a 3-6 league record. The Cougars had lost five straight Pac-10 matches and hadn't beaten the UW in the last four Apple Cup meetings.
Cougar freshmen Holly Harris and LaToya Harris led the way for WSU. LaToya Harris posted 22 kills and a match-high 25 digs while Holly Harris posted 20 kills and 13 digs.
The Huskies had lost 12 straight games over the four-match losing streak prior to taking game one, 15-11. Richardson posted six kills and Emily Seacat had five kills and five blocks to lead the UW to the opening game win. Despite 11 kills from Laffling, the Cougars came back to tie the match with a 15-10 win in game two.
Game three was a back-and-forth battle. Down 3-6, the Huskies stormed to an 11-6 lead, but woudn't score again as the Cougars finally scored the winner on their fifth game-point serve. Washington forced a game five with an outstanding blocking performance in game four. After averaging just over two blocks per game coming in, the Dawgs had eight in game four alone and Elissa Ross' service ace on game point won it, 15-13.
The Huskies return to home action next Friday and Saturday when they take on the Oregon schools at the Pavilion Addition.
