National Championship Head Women's Golf Coach Mary Lou Mulflur announced the hiring of Chessey Thomas as an assistant coach prior to the 2016-17 season. Thomas most recently spent the last season on the Idaho Vandals coaching staff in the same role.
"I am excited to add Chessey to our team," said Mulflur. "Using her experience as a successful student-athlete at Tennessee as well as her time as a professional, she will play a vital role in the development of our student-athletes. Her knowledge of all things social media will assist us in continuing to get the word out about Washington women's golf. She and SooBin create a great one, two punch for us this year and I can't wait to get started."
During her season with Idaho, the Vandals advanced to the NCAA Regional after winning the Big Sky Championship, along with the Big Sky individual champion. Additionally the team featured the Big Sky Freshman of the year and three All-Conference selections. She also helped mentor three WGCA All-American Scholars while helping Idaho finish tied for 23rd nationally for academic achievement.
Thomas played collegiate golf at the University of Tennessee (2010-14) where she had a stellar career culminating in an All-SEC Second Team selection as a senior. She competed in 38 total tournaments for the Lady Vols and led the team as a senior with a stroke average of 74.32. During her career, she posted 15 top 25 finishes including one tournament victory as a senior. As a Journalism and Electronic Media major, Thomas was also very involved in Tennessee's web and social media content.
Additionally, in 2014, she advanced to all three stages of the LPGA Qualifying School, barely missing the final tour card cut.
Born in Santiago, Chile but raised mainly in Spokane, Wash., Thomas won two-straight 4A Washington State Championships in 2009 and 2010 and was ranked as high as No. 24 among GolfWeek's Class of 2010 Commitments.
