Jonathan Winder is entering his thirdΒ year as an assistant coach for the Washington indoor program and head coach for the beach program. A former AVCA National Player of the Year at Pepperdine, Winder played several years for the U.S. National Team and spent time playing professionally overseas before breaking into the coaching ranks at his alma mater.
Upon joining the University of Washington in February of 2015, Winder said, βWashington is one of the premier volleyball programs in the nation, one of the top academic institutions in the world, and it is a beautiful place to live, work, and study. I am beyond thrilled to be working alongside Keegan Cook and Leslie Gabriel, as we work to recruit, develop, and compete at the highest level with the top players in the game.β

In Winder's two years with the Husky indoor program, Washington has two Pac-12 Championships and two runs to the Elite Eight of the NCAA tournament, while five different players have earned AVCA All-America honors.
Winder's first season in Seattle in 2015 was a memorable one, as the Huskies won a share of the Pac-12 Championship with an 18-2 league record, and advanced to the Elite Eight in the NCAA tournament before falling to eventual national champion Nebraska in four sets. Washington finished the year with a 31-3 record. Working with the Husky setters to direct the offensive attack, Winder helped UW finish second in the NCAA with a .305 attack percentage, and senior First Team All-American Lianna Sybeldon hit .450 on the year, only the third player in Pac-12 history to reach that mark for a season.
Despite graduating six seniors and four starters from that 2015 squad, the Huskies came back the next year and won the Pac-12 title outright and again reached the NCAA Elite Eight. Winder worked closely with junior setter Bailey Tanner who led the Pac-12 in assists per set and earned her first AVCA All-America honor on the Second Team, the first Husky setter since 2009 to earn All-America honors. Outside hitterΒ Courtney Schwan was named Pac-12 Player of the Year and an All-America First Team pick and opposite Crissy Jones earned All-America Second Team, the first such honors for both.
On the beach, Winder's first two seasons in 2016 and 2017 brought several firsts for the Husky program. Seeded seventh heading into the inaugural Pac-12 Beach Championships in 2016, the Huskies scored some upsetsΒ to make the semifinals and finishΒ fourth. One year later the Huskies threw out their No. 7 seeding again, upsetting higher-seeded Cal, Arizona State, and getting the program's first win over a top-10 opponent with a 4-1 win over Arizona to finish third in the Pac-12, falling in the semis to eventual NCAA Champion USC.
Crissy Jones became UW's first All-Pac-12 First Team pick on the beach in 2017, and she and Tia ScambrayΒ were chosen to the inaugural USAV Collegiate Beach Pairs Championship. Scambray, Cassie Strickland, Courtney SchwanΒ and Destiny JulyeΒ have all earned All-Pac-12 Second Team honors under Winder as well. Eight All-Pac-12 selections over 2016 and 2017 is tied with UCLA for second-most in the Pac-12 behind USC.
Winder carved quite a legacy at Pepperdine, one of the elite NCAA menβs programs. As a freshman setter in 2005, Winder helped the Waves win the NCAA Championship, and he was named the AVCA Newcomer of the Year and a Second Team All-American. As a junior in 2007, Winder was the AVCA National Player of the Year as Pepperdine made the national semifinals. The Waves went to the NCAA finals his senior season, and Winder was named First Team All-America.
Following a successful stint on the U.S. National Team and several years playing professionally overseas, Winder returned to Malibu in 2013 to work as an Academic Coordinator in the Pepperdine athletic department, handling six sports. He then moved into his assistant coaching role in June of 2013, working with Dr. Marv Dunphy, one of the most respected coaches in the history of volleyball.
βJonathan brings a championship mindset, as well as a special ability to relate to and mentor our student athletes,β said Husky head coach Keegan Cook. βHe has experienced the sport of volleyball at the highest level, and has made every program he has been a part of better. Jonathan also shares in our determination to help our student-athletes develop in all aspects of their lives.β
In his first season on staff in 2014, the Waves tied for first in the MPSF with an 18-6 record, reaching the conference tournament semifinals and ending the year ranked No. 4. Winder also coached for USA Volleyball at the High Performance Championships in 2014, coaching the Youth A1 team to the finals and leading setting instruction for all Youth A1 players.
One of just eleven menβs players to be a four-time AVCA All-American, Winder holds the career assists record at Pepperdine with 5,118, and ranked fifth all-time with 656 digs. After college, Winder played professionally for four different clubs, making stops in France, Germany, Greece, and Romania.
He became a regular on the U.S. National Team, and was an alternate for Team USA at the 2012 London Olympics. In 2010, he was on the U.S. squad that finished sixth at the World Championships. Winder was part of several other national team rosters including the 2012 FIVB World League, the Pan American Cup in 2008 and 2011, and the 2009 NORCECA Menβs Continental Championships.
A four-time MPSF All-Academic selection, and a Third Team Academic All-American in 2008, Winder graduated in 2008 with a B.A. in Advertising. He earned a Masters of Business Administration in 2015 from the Devry University Keller School of Management.
A native of Irvine, California, he is married to Jaimie-Rose Winder, and the two welcomed their first son, Hudson, in January of 2015, and their first daughter Sutton in August of 2016.
