Mariko Coverdale is in her fourth season as an assistant coach for the Washington beach squad in 2021-22 after a long and varied career in the sport playing indoors in college, professionally on the beach, and coaching high school, college, and club. Coverdale also served one season as a volunteer assistant for the Husky indoor team that advanced to the NCAA Round of 16 in 2018.
A Marysville, Wash. native, Coverdale attended Marysville Pilchuck High School where she was the conference player of the year. She went on to play two years for Saint Mary’s and then transferred to Cal Lutheran where she was a two-time AVCA First Team Div. III All-American in 2005 and 2006. Coverdale led D-III with a .492 attack percentage in 2005 and in 2006 she was third in the nation with 5.65 kills per set. She was inducted into the Cal Lutheran Athletics Hall of Fame in 2011.
Coverdale played pro beach volleyball for eight years on both the AVP and NVL tours. She had a third-place NVL tour finish in 2016.
She began coaching at the club level soon after graduation, spending six years with LAVA from 2006-11 then coaching the Sunshine Volleyball Club from 2012-15 and the Sports Academy Volleyball Club from 2016-18. She was also a high school coach at Harvard Westlake and Palisades, where she was conference coach of the year in 2011. Coverdale was a women’s assistant coach at Santa Monica College from 2010-12 and a men’s assistant at Moorpark College in 2011.
She received her Bachelor’s in Liberal Studies from Cal Lutheran.
