Former Husky captain and United States Olympian Sam Dommer returns to the UW for his third season in 2018-19. In August, 2018, Dommer was promoted to assistant coach and recruiting coordinator for the UW men's team.
In spring, 2018, Dommer helped lead the UW program to a thrilling win over Oxford Brookes University, the British collegiate champions, in one of the closest Windermere Cups in history. The Huskies went on to win the Pac-12 Championship and, at the 2018 Intercollegiate Rowing Association championships, won the second and third varsity eight national championships and the Huskies' 11th James Ten Eyck Trophy in the last 12 seasons.
Over the summer, Dommer served as head coach of the UW crew that competed at the Henley Royal Regatta in England. The Husky men's eight, comprised mainly of members of the second and third eights, won the Temple Challenge Cup. The Huskies won the race in five minutes, 58 seconds, five seconds faster than the old record for the Temple Challenge Cup, an event for men's collegiate eights that was first held in 1990. The Huskies won five match races over the five-day regatta this week to win in a field of 32 entries, including nine from American colleges.
In the summer of 2019, Dommer will also serve as an assistant for the USRowing Under-23 Men's National Team.
In 2017, as a part of the Washington staff, he helped guide the program to the Pac-12 Championship and victories in three out of four events at the 2017 Intercollegiate Rowing Association championships, where the Huskies won their 10th Jim Ten Eyck Trophy in the last 11 years as overall points champion.
Dommer joined the UW staff after competing at the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio as a member of the United States eight, which finished fourth. He also rowed in the U.S. eight at World Championships in 2014 and 2015.
As the 2014 UW captain, Dommer capped his collegiate career with a win in the men's varsity eight grand final at the 2014 IRA championships, when the Huskies won their unprecedented (at the time) fourth straight IRA crown. A first-team All-Pac-12 and Academic All-Pac-12 selection, Dommer earned the UW's Top Dawg Award and Tom Hansen Pac-12 Conference Medal as Washington's top male senior student-athlete.
Dommer also rowed in the Husky varsity eight as a sophomore and junior, winning IRA titles in both of those years as well. As a freshman in 2010 (he redshirted the 2011 season), the Folsom, Calif., rowed in the UW's undefeated freshman eight, which also went on to win the Temple Cup at the Henley Royal Regatta that summer.
