Dan Salerno joined the Washington men's rowing coaching staff at the start of the 2019-20 academic year. The 2020-21 season marks his second year with the program.
Salerno brings a history of coaching and teaching to Conibear Shellhouse. For the last five school years, he taught middle school and high school English and language arts at schools in New Jersey and Delaware, having also worked in the Teach for America program.
At the same time as he was teaching, Salerno also coached rowing. From December of 2016 through May of 2019, he was the head rowing coach at Absegami High School in Galloway, N.J. His crews won the MJV8+ title at both the Philadelphia City and Atlantic County Championships in 2018 and his men's varsity four won the Atlantic County in 2017. From August, 2014, to May of 2016, he was the freshman coach at the University of Delaware, logging four top-two finishes at the Dad Vail Regatta, including a win in the freshman lightweight eight in 2016. He was also a freshman coach at Mainland High School in Linwood, N.J., in 2013-14.
A lightweight oarsman at the University of Delaware, Salerno was a member of a lightweight varsity eight that won the Dad Vail in 2013. He earned a bachelor's degree in English education from Delaware in 2013 and a master's in ESOL literacy from Wilmington University in Dec. of 2018.
