THIS WEEKEND: The Washington baseball team plays host to Utah this weekend as the Utes make their first visit to Husky Ballpark as a member of the Pac-12 Conference.
Game times are Friday at 5:00 p.m. and both Saturday and Sunday at 12 noon. Please note those Saturday and Sunday game times, which have been moved from their ordinary times to accommodate TV. Games two and three of the series will both air live on Pac-12 Networks television, with JB Long and former Husky shortstop Kevin Stocker calling the action.
The Huskies will maintain the weekend pitching rotation they've utilized the last several weeks with sophomore RHP Jared Fisher starting Friday and junior righty Austin Voth getting the ball on Saturday. Sunday's starter has yet to be determined.
Fans can follow live Gametracker stats of all three games and watch free, live video stream of Friday's game by following the links. Games that are televised can not be streamed, as is the games with the second and third games of this series.
HISTORY WITH THE UTES: Considering that, for many years, Utah was one of the four or five closest (geographically) major college, non-conference opponents, it's perhaps surprising that the Huskies and Utes had only ever faced one another five times prior to Utah joining the Pac-12 Conference last year. The teams first met at a tournament in San Diego in 1974, a 10-2 Utes win. It wasn't until 1995 that they met again, with the Utes winning a 7-5 decision at a tournament in Las Vegas that season. In 2002, Utah played a three-game series at Husky Ballpark. The UW Shawn Kohn. The Utes won games two and three, Aaron West pitched seven shutout innings and both Chase Anselment and Jacob Lamb homered in a 9-1 Dawgs win. The next day, the Utes used three pitchers to blank the UW, 6-0. Washington took the series with a 7-6 win in game three, holding off a late Utes rally.
NEXT UP: The Huskies tour the Northwest next week as the Dawgs travel to face Portland in the Rose City on Tuesday afternoon. The following weekend, the UW's annual series vs. Washington State will be contested in Pasco, Wash., at GESA Stadium, home to the Northwest League's Tri-City Dust Devils. The UW then closes out the regular season vs. Arizona State May 24-26.
HUSKY BALLPARK CONSTRUCTION: Immediately following the conclusion of the 2013 UW baseball season, construction is scheduled to begin on the new grandstand at Husky Ballpark, which will be completed in time for the 2014 season. The new stadium will include seating for 2,200, a new team performance center, new scoreboard and field turn, new press box and a full compliment of public restrooms and concessions. For more on the new facility, check out huskyballpark.com.
HOME GAMES ON VIDEO: Washington fans can watch live video broadcast of all Husky HOME games this season (other than those games that will air on Pac-12 Networks television). There is no cost for this service and you can find the links via the UW baseball schedule page, or on future game and series previews like this one.
GAME PREVIEWS: GoHuskies.com has done away with the old, traditional "weekly notes" for many sports this academic year, so for the coming baseball season, this will be the manner in which each week's games will be previewed. The hope is that, with all of the links provided (particularly to the team's roster and bios, which will be regularly updated throughout the season, including updated career statistics), that fans will have much more information at their fingertips via this page than they ever had via old-style notes. If you have any thoughts on other links or information that might be included, please click on the "feedback" link at the very bottom of this page and let us know.
