Seattle Regional Set To Begin Friday

SEATTLE -Teams are beginning to arrive and prepping for the 2013 NCAA Seattle Regional Friday-Sunday at Husky Softball Stadium. With the No. 11 overall seed in the tournament the Huskies moved up to No. 11/9 in the national polls Tuesday.
Washington welcomes familiar foes, No. 20/23 Hawai'i and Portland State and Minnesota out of the Big Ten. Hawai'i earned the automatic bid out of the Big West; Portland State the automatic berth out of the Big Sky and Minnesota was an at-large selection.
Portland State (25-29) enters the tournament winning its third-straight conference tournament, defeating Southern Utah (twice) and Idaho State. Anna Bertrand is the leader in the circle with a 21-15 record and a 2.71 ERA. At the plate, Brittany Hendrickson leads the way with a .354 average, 12 doubles, nine home runs and 42 RBI.
Washington is 38-1 all-time against the Vikings. The two teams last met in the Seattle Regional in 2011 with the Huskies winning 6-2. Portland State and Hawai'i met earlier in the season with Hawai'i taking two games, 7-0 and 8-3. A third game was scheduled and rained out.
Hawai'i went an impressive 43-11 overall and won the regular season Big West title with a 20-4 mark. Pitcher Kaia Parnaby and outfielder Kelly Majam were named the Big West Pitcher and Player of the Year. Washington and Hawai'i met on opening weekend in the Paradise Softball Classic in Honolulu. Hawai'i took game one from the Huskies, 5-2, but Washington won the championship game, 3-1, to take the tournament title. Washington leads the overall series 9-2.
This is the first NCAA appearance for Minnesota (35-17) since 2003 coming off a second-place finish at the Big Ten Tournament. Sara Moulton is the pitching ace with a 31-10 record, 1.53 ERA and 279 strikeouts. Kaitlyn Richardson is batting an impressive .440 with 41 RBI. If Washington and Minnesota meet it will be the first time under head coach Heather Tarr. Washington is 3-0-1 all-time in the series as the two tied, 5-5, in the last meeting in 2003. All four meetings dating back to 1993 were on neutral sites.
The Seattle Regional is paired up with the Columbia, Mo., Regional. Missouri, the No. 6 seed in the tournament, is hosting Stony Brook, Hofstra and Oregon State. The winner of those two Regionals will meet in the Super Regionals next weekend. Exact dates, times and location will depend on this weekend's outcome.
