Williams Named To Palmer Cup Team...Again

NORMAN, Okla. - For the second consecutive year, Husky junior golfer Chris Williams has been selected to represent the United States team at the Palmer Cup. The 2012 version of the annual Ryder Cup-style competition will be played June 28-30 at The Royal County Down Golf Club in Newcastle, Northern Ireland.
It marks the third time Williams will represent the U.S. in international play. The Moscow, Idaho native was 2-0-2 at the 2011 Palmer Cup in which the Americans defeated the Europeans 13-11 at the Sandwich Club in Greenwich, Connecticut. He was 1-1 in 2011 Walker Cup action at Royal Aberdeen Golf Club where the Great Britain and Ireland squad that took home the Cup.
Williams and Brock Mackenzie (2002) are the only Huskies to ever play in the Palmer Cup. UW Coach Matt Thurmond led the American team in 2009.
Josh Gregory of SMU will coach the United States team. Georgia Tech's Christian Newton will serve as his assistant.
Blayne Barber of Auburn, UNLV's Derek Ernst, Corbin Mills of Clemson, Patrick Rodgers and Andrew Yun of Stanford, Alabama's Justin Thomas and James White of Georgia Tech join Williams on Team USA.
Williams, who played in the 2011 U.S. Open, is the Huskies all-time leader in wins with five. He has 18 career top-10 finishes, which is tied for 3rd most in UW history and his 2012 stroke average of 70.28 stands as the lowest in UW single-season history.
Williams is currently ranked 4th by Scratch Players Golf, 6th by World Amateur Golf Rankings, 6th by Golfweek.com and 7th by Golfstat.com.
