Eight UW Baseball Signees Taken In MLB Draft

In all, eight members of the Huskies' most recent recruiting class were taken in the three-day draft. On the first day, right-handed pitcher Robert Stephenson (Martinez, Calif./Alhambra HS) was chosen by the Reds in the first round and lefty Blake Snell (Shoreline, Wash./Shorewood) was selected by Tampa Bay in the supplemental round (between first and second rounds).
Tuesday, four Husky signees were drafted: OF Dayton Alexander (Wailuku, Hawai'i/Feather River CC) was drafted by Oakland in the sixth round; 1B Trevor Mitsui (Shoreline, Wash./Shorewood HS) was chosen by Tampa Bay in the 12th round; RHP George Asmus (Pleasanton, Calif./Ohlone College) went to the Cubs in the 24th round; and RHP Jared Fisher (Bellevue, Wash./Newport HS) was selected by Houston in the 26th round.

On Wednesday, Forgione, an infielder from W.F. West High in Chehalis, Wash., was taken in the 33rd round by the Angels. In 2011, he helped lead W.F. West to a third-place finish at the state tournament. Also an honorable mention all-state wide receiver for the football team, he'll play in the state all-star game later this month.
Burgher, a right-handed pitcher from Puyallup's Emerald Ridge High, was drafted by the Twins in the 50th round. A first-team All-South Puget Sound League selection as a pitcher and a second-teamer as a first baseman, he hit .474 and was 3-1 with a 1.75 ERA as a senior in 2011.
All eight drafted UW baseball recruits signed with the Huskies last November. If they don't opt to sign a pro contract by Aug. 15, they'll enroll at Washington this fall and begin their Husky careers in the spring of 2012.
