Four More UW Recruits Selected In MLB Draft

June 7, 2011
Incoming UW baseball recruits Dayton Alexander, Trevor Mitsui, George Asmus and Jared Fisher were selected on the second day of the 2011 Major League Baseball Draft Tuesday.
Alexander was chosen by Oakland in the sixth round, the 196th overall selection, while Mitsui was chosen by the Tampa Bay Rays in the 12th round, 390th overall. Asmus was the Cubs' 24th-round pick, 729th overall, and Fisher went in the 26th round to Houston as the No. 790 overall choice.
As a sophomore at Feather River College (Quincy, Calif.) this past spring, Alexander earned first-team all-league and first-team All-Northern California honors. A starter in all 38 games, he helped lead the Golden Eagles to a 31-7 overall record, a 23-2 league mark and the Golden Valley Conference title.
Alexander, who prepped at Kamehameha High in Maui, hit .382 (fourth-best in the league) in 2011 and led the conference in hits (58) and stolen bases (18). He also ranked in the top five in slugging (.592), on-base percentage (.469), runs (49), doubles (16) and home runs (4).
Mitsui, a first baseman from Shorewood High in Shoreline, Wash., was named the Gatorade State Player of the Year for Washington after an outstanding senior season. He batted .712 with 13 home runs, 26 RBI and an on-base average of .845. He struck out only once in 97 plate appearances and helped lead the Thunderbirds to the 3A state title game. Mitsui boasts a 3.62 GPA.
Asmus, a right-handed pitcher from Ohlone College (Fremont, Calif.), went 4-1 with a 1.96 ERA over 10 regular-season starts this past spring from the Renegades, helping to lead the team to the state championship tournament and earning first-team all-conference. In 69 innings, he gave up 52 hits and 20 walks while striking out 83, second-most in the Coast Conference.
Playing under current UW assistant coach Jordon Twohig, Asmus helped Ohlone to the state title as a freshman in 2010. He's a graduate of Foothill High in Pleasanton, Calif.
Fisher, a right-handed pitcher from Newport High in Belleuve, Wash., was 8-2 with a 1.92 earned run average in 10 outings this past spring, helping the Knights to the regional final game. He pitched 51 innings as a senior, allowing 36 hits while striking out 64.
A first-team All-KingCo 4A selection as a pitcher and a second-team pitcher, Fisher also batted .360 with 25 runs batted in last spring.
On Monday's first day of the MLB Draft, two incoming UW recruits were selected as right-handed pitcher Robert Stephenson (Martinez, Calif.) was chosen by the Reds with the 27th overall pick and lefty Blake Snell (Shoreline, Wash.) was picked by Tampa Bay with the 52nd selection.
All six drafted UW recruits signed with the Huskies last November. If they don't opt to sign a pro contract by Aug. 15, they'll enroll at Washington this fall and begin their Husky careers in the spring of 2012.
The three-day draft concludes Wednesday, starting at 9:00 a.m. PT, with rounds 31-50.
