SPOKANE, Wash. -- Four Huskies travelled across the state with assistant women's golf coach Andrea VanderLende to play in the 36-hole Gonzaga Spring Invitational on Sunday and the UW contingent did not leave disappointed.
Junior Darcie Richmond won the tournament, freshman Kelli Bowers tied for second and sophomore Brittany Tallman made her first career hole-in-one to highlight the quick road trip for the Huskies.
The tournament was an individual-only event with no team scores.
Richmond (Bothell, Wash.) played the tournament at the 6,064-yard, par-70 Liberty Lake golf course at 4-over par 144 to win by two strokes. She turned in rounds of 73 and 71 in sometimes rainy and windy conditions to earn her first college tournament victory. He second round 71 was the best round among 26 competitors in the afternoon.
"Darcie had more of a scramble round, which are always more fun," said VanderLende. "It's good to know that you don't have to hit the ball perfectly and play perfectly and you can still win."
Bowers (Chelan, Wash.) shot a 74 in the morning and a 72 in the afternoon and tied with Gonzaga's Victoria Fallgren for second.
A Ram Choi (Surrey, B.C.) shot a 74 and 76 to finish at 150 and tie for fifth.
Although Tallman (Issaquah, Wash.) was fourth among Huskies at 153 and finished tied for 10th overall after a 76 and 77, it was her shot on the par-3, 159-yard 11th hole that had everyone talking. She swung a 7-iron and the ball landed about 15-feet short of the cup and rolled into the hole. It was Tallman's first career hole-in-one.
The Huskies return to Karsten Golf Course in Tempe, Ariz. next week for the Pac-10 Championships and VanderLende felt like this weekend served as a great barometer for the players as they prepare for that event.
"It was nice to play on firm greens, which is similar to what we'll see at ASU next week, and we were able to work out all our kinks and hopefully we'll be ready for Pac-10's," said VanderLende.
