WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - Washington senior Alex Prugh is tied for fifth and the 32nd-ranked Husky men's golf team is tied for sixth after one round at the Boilermaker Invitational at Kampen Golf Course, Saturday.
Washington shot 23-over 311 and will enter the final round Sunday tied with Auburn, 11 strokes behind leader Purdue (12-over 300). Michigan State trails the host Boilermakers by one stroke (13-over 301) followed by Northwestern and Indiana (20-over 308). Prugh led the Huskies carding a 3-over 75 and is just three shots behind leader Ryan Brehm from Michigan State (even-par 72).
The tournament was shortened from 54 holes to 36 due to frost on the course, Saturday. Play was delayed until noon today which limited play to 18 holes instead of 36. The teams still battled freezing cold temperatures and wind on the course. The second and final round will begin Sunday with a shotgun start scheduled for 10 a.m. CT, weather permitting.
"The conditions were as tough as I've ever seen them," UW head coach Matt Thurmond said. "I thought the guys competed pretty hard today all things considered."
Sophomore transfer Chris Killmer and junior Zach Bixler carded rounds of 6-over 78 and are tied for 28th in the individual standings. Freshman Nick Taylor is tied for 42nd after shooting 8-over 80 and freshman Joel Dahmen is tied for 62nd (10-over 82).
