May 3, 2005
WALNUT CREEK, Calif. - Washington sophomore designated hitter Curt Rindal has been named Pacific-10 Conference Baseball Player of the Week and USC sophomore Ian Kennedy has been named Pitcher of the Week for April 26-May 2, Commissioner Tom Hansen announced today.
Rindal, from Mount Vernon, Wash., went 8-for-15 (.533) with five runs, 12 runs batted in, two doubles and three home runs in the Huskies' three-game sweep at Washington State. In the UW's 14-2 win on May 1, Rindal hit two homers, scored three runs and drove in four. He came into the weekend series with only 13 RBI all season and nearly doubled that total with 12 in the three games. Rindal did, in fact, more than double his home run total, pushing it from two to five.
Kennedy, from Huntington Beach, Calif., struck out 14 batters in eight scoreless innings of work in the Trojans' 13-0 shutout at Arizona on April 29. The right-hander allowed just three hits and three walks against a team that was batting .328 entering the contest. In doing so, Kenedy helped theTrojans hand Arizona pitcher John Meloan his first loss as a starter in two years. On the season, Kennedy is now 8-1 with a 2.53 ERA, having recorded a Conference-leading 108 strikeouts while issuing just 28 walks in 74 and two- thirds innings pitched. He is now 5-0 with a 1.72 ERA in Pac-10 games with 11 walks and 58 strikeouts, and has registered double digits in strikeouts in four of his last five starts.
The Player of the Week honor is the first of Rindal's career, while it is the 46th such honor for Washington. The Pitcher of the Week honor is the second for Kennedy and the 56th selection all-time for USC.
