SERIES HISTORY: Washington State leads the all-time series against Washington, 223-168. However, over the last decade or so, the Huskies have had the better of things as Husky coach Ken Knutson, in 12 seasons, boasts a 51-23 record against the Cougars and has lost a season series to WSU only twice in his tenure, including earlier this season when the Cougs took a non-conference series from the Dawgs, two games to one. In the first of that series, WSU broke a 4-4 tie with seven runs in the eighth to win 11-5. The following day, the Huskies scored 14 in the first inning en route to a 20-8 win. Sunday, the Cougars took the series when Zach Kosturos belted a ninth-inning, two-out homer for a 11-10 win. Last year, the Huskies swept a three-game, non-conference series in Seattle (11-8, 6-5, 8-1) and took two of three at Washington State (9-8, 9-4, 2-6), finishing the year with a 5-1 mark against their cross-state rival.
COACH "K": Now in his 12th season in charge of the Washington baseball team, Ken Knutson has compiled an impressive list of accomplishments. Knutson has led the Dawgs to two Pac-10 championships, four Pac-10 Northern Division titles, two other second-place finishes and five NCAA Regional berths. His career overall record now stands at 407-261-2 (.609). With 407 wins, he is the second-winningest coach in UW history, trailing only Bob MacDonald (422). Before becoming the Husky head man in 1993, Knutson served as the Husky pitching coach for eight seasons. In 1985, his UW pitching staff led the nation with a 2.80 ERA. Knutson holds a 197-83-2 (.702) record in home games. He is 171-117 (.594) in Pac-10 games. Knutson has coached 40 first-team All-Pac-10 selections in 11 seasons, and has been named league coach of the year three times. A 1981 All-Pac-10 left-handed pitcher at the UW, he is joined by assistants Joe Ross, Travis Jewett, and Gregg Swenson and undergrad assistant Scott Robertson.

LAST WEEK: Washington concluded its 12-game stretch of road games with two wins in three games at California last weekend before picking up a win Tuesday at Portland. Friday, the Huskies dropped the opener at Berkeley, 9-4. The UW had a 3-0 lead before Cal broke a 3-3 tie in the seventh. The Bears went on to score five in the eighth before Zach Clem provided the last Husky run with his eighth homer in the ninth. Saturday, freshman Kyle Parker made his first career start and got the win, allowing two runs over seven innings in a 7-4 win. Matt Lane had a three-run homer and four RBIs on the day. Sunday, the Dawgs fell behind 3-0 in the first, but first-time starter Matt Kasser settled in, allowing only four runs over his seven innings as the Huskies won, 6-4. Brent Lillibridge homered for the Huskies. Tuesday, the Huskies rapped six doubles in an 8-5 win over Portland. Richie Lentz allowed only one hit over four innings of relief and Taylor Johnson had two doubles.
NORTHWEST FLAVOR: As is usually the case, the Husky baseball roster is made up primarily of players from the state of Washington. In fact, 32 of the 36 players on the preseason roster are from the state of Washington, and another, Trent Baysinger, grew up in the city of Moscow, Idaho, just a mile or so from the Washington border. Aside from Washington and Idaho, only two other states are represented on the Husky roster as two players come from the state of Colorado -- RS-freshman Matt Tucker and sophomore Devin Warner -- and other from Oregon, freshman James Allan.
PRESEASON ACCOLADES: Perhaps more than in any other season since the 1999 merger of the Pac-10's two divisions, the preseason publications have a lot of good things to say about the 2004 Husky baseball team. The Huskies were ranked no lower than 35th in the various preseason polls: No. 23 in Collegiate Baseball, No. 27 in the ESPN/Sports Weekly coaches' poll, No. 35 in Baseball America and No. 18 in the NCBWA (baseball writers) poll. Baseball America, in its extensive preview edition, tabbed the UW for a sixth-place finish, but included the Dawgs in its postseason projections. The Huskies were represented by Will Fenton on the preseason All-Pac-10 team while Fenton was also named the No. 9 Pac-10 prospect for the 2004 draft. Junior 1B Kyle Larsen was No. 10 on that list while freshman RHP Tim Lincecum was named the No. 5 newcomer in the league. Additionally, Fenton was tabbed for the best fastball and the best breaking ball in the league while junior C Aaron Hathaway earned best defensive catcher and best arm for a catcher. Sophomore SS Brent Lillibridge was named best infield arm in the league and Larsen was named best defensive 1B.
