Baseball Continues Road Stretch At ASU

March 24, 2004
WHAT'S UP?: The Washington baseball team (13-6-1) continues its current stretch of 12 road games with a three-game series at seventh-ranked Arizona State (20-5, 1-2). The series marks the opening of Pac-10 play for the Huskies, while ASU opened the conference last weekend vs. Cal. Friday night's gametime is 7:00 p.m. MST (6:00 p.m. PST) while on Saturday and Sunday, first pitch is at 1:00 p.m. MST (noon PST). All three games will air live on KKNW AM-1150, with play-by-play man Steve Sandmeyer calling the action. Fans can also catch the radio coverage over the internet at gohuskies.com. After the ASU series, the Huskies travel to California the following weekend before closing out the road stretch with a single game at Portland April 6. The Dawgs return home to face Washington State in a Pac-10 series, April 8-10 (Thu.-Sat.). Here's a look at this weekend's series at Arizona State, with probable starting pitchers:
Fri., March 26: UW at ASU, 7 p.m. MST -- RHP Tim Lincecum (2-0, 2.91) -- KKNW radio
Sat., March 27: UW at ASU, 1 p.m. MST -- RHP Keaton Everitt (3-1, 5.16) -- KKNW radio
Sun., March 28: UW at ASU, 1 p.m. MST -- RHP Richie Lentz (2-2, 6.35) -- KKNW radio
SERIES HISTORY: Arizona State leads the all-time series against Washington, 12-6. All 18 of those meetings have come of the last seven seasons and the Huskies have only played one series at ASU's Packard Stadium (the road series in 2002 was played at HoHoKam Park in Mesa). Last year, the Dawgs won two of three against the third-ranked Devils at Husky Ballpark in the next to last weekend of the year. In the opener, Mike Wagner belted two home runs and Sean White threw six innings in a 5-1 Husky win. Each team managed only six hits. In game two, Wagner homered again, but the Huskies fell, 11-3, thanks largely to a five-run third inning from ASU. In the series finale, Chad Boudon broke the UW single-season home runs record with his 20th and 21st home runs of the season in a 6-4 Washington win. Brent Lillibridge also hit his second homer of the series for the Huskies. Ken Knutson is 6-12 all-time vs. ASU and 1-5 in games played on the road (Packard Stadium and HoHoKam Park).
COACH "K": Now in his 12th season in charge of the Washington baseball team, Ken Knutson has compiled an impressive list of accomplishments. Knutson has led the Dawgs to two Pac-10 championships, four Pac-10 Northern Division titles, two other second-place finishes and five NCAA Regional berths. His career overall record now stands at 402-259-2 (.608). With 402 wins, he is the second-winningest coach in UW history, trailing only Bob MacDonald (422). Before becoming the Husky head man in 1993, Knutson served as the Husky pitching coach for eight seasons. In 1985, his UW pitching staff led the nation with a 2.80 ERA. Knutson holds a 197-83-2 (.702) record in home games. He is 167-115 (.592) in Pac-10 games. Knutson has coached 40 first-team All-Pac-10 selections in 11 seasons, and has been named league coach of the year three times. A 1981 All-Pac-10 left-handed pitcher at the UW, he is joined by assistants Joe Ross, Travis Jewett, and Gregg Swenson and undergrad assistant Scott Robertson.

LAST WEEK: The Huskies went 3-2 during a trip to the eastside of the state, losing two of three at Washington State (non-conference) before winning a pair of games at Gonzaga. Last Friday at WSU, the UW fell victim to a seven-run eighth inning and lost, 11-5, despite two homers from Brent Lillibridge. The game was tied before WSU's Zach McAngus' seventh-inning grand slam. Saturday, the Huskies sent 20 batters to the plate in the first inning, scoring 14 runs en route to a 20-8 win. For the second straight day, Lillibridge led off the first with a homer and Greg Isaacson drove in four runs. Sunday, the Huskies trailed 6-1 before taking a 9-8 lead on an eighth-inning grand slam from Isaacson. The Cougars, however, hit two homers in the bottom of the ninth, including a two-out two run shot from Zach Kosturos, to win, 11-10. Monday at Gonzaga, the Huskies emerged from a see-saw battle with a 10-9 win. Kyle Larsen's ninth-inning double broke a 10-10 tie and reliever Jamie Hawkins, who gave up a grand slam that tied the game, retired nine of the last 10 for the win. Tuesday, Washington belted five homers in a 12-5 win. Ben Johnson hit home runs from both sides of the plate while Larsen, Zach Clem and Taylor Johnson also went deep.
NORTHWEST FLAVOR: As is usually the case, the Husky baseball roster is made up primarily of players from the state of Washington. In fact, 32 of the 36 players on the preseason roster are from the state of Washington, and another, Trent Baysinger, grew up in the city of Moscow, Idaho, just a mile or so from the Washington border. Aside from Washington and Idaho, only two other states are represented on the Husky roster as two players come from the state of Colorado -- RS-freshman Matt Tucker and sophomore Devin Warner -- and other from Oregon, freshman James Allan.
PRESEASON ACCOLADES: Perhaps more than in any other season since the 1999 merger of the Pac-10's two divisions, the preseason publications have a lot of good things to say about the 2004 Husky baseball team. The Huskies were ranked no lower than 35th in the various preseason polls: No. 23 in Collegiate Baseball, No. 27 in the ESPN/Sports Weekly coaches' poll, No. 35 in Baseball America and No. 18 in the NCBWA (baseball writers) poll. Baseball America, in its extensive preview edition, tabbed the UW for a sixth-place finish, but included the Dawgs in its postseason projections. The Huskies were represented by Will Fenton on the preseason All-Pac-10 team while Fenton was also named the No. 9 Pac-10 prospect for the 2004 draft. Junior 1B Kyle Larsen was No. 10 on that list while freshman RHP Tim Lincecum was named the No. 5 newcomer in the league. Additionally, Fenton was tabbed for the best fastball and the best breaking ball in the league while junior C Aaron Hathaway earned best defensive catcher and best arm for a catcher. Sophomore SS Brent Lillibridge was named best infield arm in the league and Larsen was named best defensive 1B.
