SEATTLE – LeJuan Watts scored a game-high 28 points and Nikola Dzepina added a double double with 16 points and 12 rebounds but Washington fell short in its exhibition Sunday with Washington State, 84-80 at Alaska Airlines Arena.
Â
Despite trailing by eight with 46 seconds to play, the Huskies gave themselves a shot to tie in the waning seconds. However, Watts' attempted tying three pointer was blocked by Ronnie Harrison as the Cougars closed out the win.
Â
In addition to Watts and Dzepina's offensive efforts, Lathan Sommerville poured in 19 points on 6-of-7 from the field, also adding four rebounds.
Â
After allowing the Cougars to scored six of the game's first seven points, the Huskies used a 16-3 run to grab an eight point lead just under six minutes into the game.
Â
Washington built its lead to as many as 10 in the first half but WSU closed the opening 20 minutes strong, taking a 38-37 advantage into the break.
Â
The Huskies again started the second half on the front foot, building a six-point lead with 12 minutes to play.
Â
After a 10-0 burst from WSU put the Cougars back in front, Watts' driving layup with 5:46 to go deadlocked the score at 62-62.
Â
However, Harrison made back-to-back buckets to push the Cougars back in front and the Dawgs were never able to narrow the gap.
Â
Washington begins the regular season at home on Nov. 2, hosting Colgate at Alaska Airlines Arena for a 7:00 p.m. PT tipoff, streaming on B1G+.
