Huskies Fall In Another Five Set Marathon
August 31, 2025 | Volleyball
GREELEY, Colo. – The fifth set trend continued for the Husky volleyball team today in Colorado, with the Huskies finding themselves on the short end once again at Bank of Colorado Arena, falling to Colgate to drop to 1-2 on the season, all three matches so far going the distance. Washington had a sluggish start but easily won sets three and four to get out of an 0-2 hole, but then Colgate took the momentum back and completed the 25-22, 25-15, 19-25, 17-25, 15-10 victory.
It's just the second time in school history that UW has opened with three straight five setters, the only other previous occurrence coming in 1984. The Dawgs dropped a five setter on Friday to Northern Colorado, but responded with a five set win at Colorado State last night. After battling back again today, the Huskies seemed to run out of gas in the final set.
Washington led in kills for the match, 53-50, but made 31 errors to hit .155 while Colgate hit .208 overall. UW also had an edge in aces, 11-9, but the Patriot League champs controlled the net, holding a 15.0 to 7.0 edge in blocks, and also leading in digs, 46 to 39.
Kierstyn Barton led the Huskies with 15 kills and Alexa Markley had 11. Freshman Simona Mateska played her first extended front row action today and she was a bright spot with six kills on 11 swings without an error, hitting .545. Katy Wessels had seven kills and three blocks and Julia Hunt had six kills and three blocks.
Taylor Simpson had 40 assists and a career-high five aces, adding three kills. Zoria Heard had 17 digs and three assists.
Up Next: Washington will head to Dallas next week where 10th-ranked SMU provides a huge first challenge on Thursday, Sept. 4, at 5 p.m. Pacific and televised on ACC Network. UW will also play Stony Brook and Northern Iowa in Dallas.
