May 02, 2025 | Women's Tennis
SEATTLE – The No. 16 Washington women's tennis team (21-4, 11-2 Big Ten) opened up NCAA play Friday afternoon with a 4-0 sweep of the Stetson Hatters at Bill Quillian Tennis Stadium.
Washington's 21 wins is tied for the most in the Robin Stephenson era and matches the second most wins in a season in program history.
The Huskies saw a few changes in their doubles lineup for the first time since the beginning of Big Ten play, as McKenna Koenig and Carina Syrtveit played No. 2 doubles and secured the first doubles point.
The freshman/senior pairing notched a dominant 6-1 win over Stetson's Tuliakova/Adeikyte.
Reece Carter and Alexia Jacobs claimed the doubles point for UW with a 6-2 victory of their own on the top court.
With a 1-0 lead heading into singles, Sophie Luescher made swift moves in singles play, defeating Lombardi, 6-2, 6-0, her 15th singles win of the year.
Despite almost losing a sizable lead in her first set, Jacobs pulled out a first set win over DiFrancesco, courtesy of a 7-4 tiebreak. The sophomore earned a 6-2 second set win to leave it all to Washington to put one more point on the board.
In her first NCAA match of her career, Syrtveit clinched the victory for the Dawgs, defeating Adeikyte, 6-2, 7-5. She improved to 18-4 in singles play her freshman season.
"I'm super happy with the win today," Syrtveit said. "We are very happy to get another match on our home courts in front of so many people who support us every single day."
The Huskies will face former Pac-12 foe No. 19 California in a second-round matchup back on Montlake. First serve is set for 1 p.m. at Bill Quillian Tennis Stadium.
