April 03, 2025 | Men's Basketball
SEATTLE – Washington head men's basketball coach Danny Sprinkle has announced the Huskies' first addition from the transfer portal of the spring, inking big man Lathan Sommerville on Monday.
A former four star, top-100 recruit out of Peoria, Illinois, Sommerville played his freshman season in 2024-25 at fellow Big Ten program Rutgers.
"We are extremely excited to have Lathan join our program," Sprinkle said. "Lathan will bring a combination of size, skill and physicality that is needed in Big Ten play. His versatility, combined with character, will make him a great addition to Husky basketball and our campus community."
The 6-10 center appeared in 32 games for the Scarlet Knights, including a stretch of 15-straight starts, all in Big Ten play. Sommerville averaged 8.2 points and 4.1 rebounds per game on the season. On 20.9 minutes per game, Sommerville shot 50.6 percent from the field and 86.3 percent from the free throw line.
Of the 10 double-figure scoring performances of Sommerville's rookie campaign in Piscataway, six came against Big Ten opposition, including a season-high 17 points with three boards against Michigan on Feb. 1.
In Rutgers' final game of the season, a Big Ten Tournament matchup with USC, Sommerville posted 16 points on 6-of-11 from the field and 4-of-5 from the charity stripe, chipping in five rebounds.
Sommerville signed with the Scarlet Knights ahead of the 2024-25 season as a consensus four-star prospect, earning top-150 status from numerous outlets, including a No. 87 overall and No. 24 center ranking per ESPN. Sommerville finished runner up for Illinois's Mr. Basketball award as a senior.
