Maatoug Wins Big Ten Track Athlete Of The Week

SEATTLE – Coming off her record setting mile run, and heading into UW's first Big Ten Indoor Championships this weekend, junior Amina Maatoug has won the Big Ten Women's Track Athlete of the Week award. Maatoug went to No. 10 in NCAA history in the mile with a time of 4:26.39 at the BU Terrier Last Chance Meet in Boston on Friday, Feb. 21.

It's the second Big Ten Athlete of the Week honor for the 8^th-ranked Husky women this season, and the first on the track, after Amanda Moll won the Field Athlete of the Week award last week.

The native of the Netherlands transferred to the Dawgs from Duke and has made a huge impact on the track this winter. She has set three different School Records over the past two meets, anchoring the DMR to a record time of 10:40.44 on Feb. 14, then one day later setting a 3,000-meters record of 8:46.20. She then broke the mile record last Friday, with teammate Chloe Foerster just a split second behind in 4:26.54 for the No. 12 mark in NCAA history.

Washington will head to Indianapolis to take part in its first Big Ten Indoor Championships this Friday-Saturday, Feb. 28-Mar. 1, streaming live on Big Ten Plus.
