Huskies Sweep Head Of The Lake To Finish Fall Season
November 02, 2025 | Women's Rowing
The Washington women's rowing team completed its fall competition season with wins in the varsity and junior varsity eights races at the annual Head of the Lake Regatta.
The annual event, co-hosted by the UW and Lake Washington Rowing Club, features a three-mile course, which starts in Lake Union, northeast of Gasworks Park, crosses Portage Bay, runs through the Montlake Cut and finishes in Union Bay of Lake Washington, just east of Conibear Shellhouse. See the link to the map for more.
Washington had two entries in the premier women's even, the Championship Women's Collegiate/Open 8+, sponsored by Pocock Racing Shells. The crew racing as the #16 bow, coxed by returning varsity cox Izzy Michaelson, won the event, finishing in 17:08.353. The other Husky crew was less than six seconds back, with a time of 17:14.014. A Washington State crew finished in third.
In the JV eights race, Washington also had two crews competing. The #22 crew beat the #21 entry with a final time of 17:13.475, about 26 seconds in front of the other Husky boat. WSU took third once again.
In the women's 3V8+ race, the Huskies had a fifth varsity crew, as well as a freshman entry. UW's veteran crew won the race in 18:03.550, with crews from the University of British Columbia and Washington State taking second and third. The Husky freshmen finished in fourth place.
Washington also won the Women's Collegiate/Open 4+ Jan Harville Cup in 20:34.521. Two Seattle Pacific University crews finished in second and third place.
UW alumna and current assistant coach Elena Collier-Hezel picked up a victory in the Women's Open 1x Lucy Pocock Stillwell Cup, completing the course in 22:37.742. more than a minute ahead of the second-place finisher.
Many of the same women who had rowed in eights earlier in the morning returned to the course a bit later as Washington entered 16 pairs in the Women's Collegiate 2- event.
In that race, UW veterans Cillian Mullen and Jess Weir came out with the win, finishing in 20:31.45. The pair of Violet Holbrow Brooksbank and Cait Whittard notched a time of 20:47.409 to finish in second place, with Zola Kemp and Amelia Westbrook taking third, about 1.3 seconds further back.

"Today was about more than winning," said head coach Yasmin Farooq, now in her 10th year at UW. "It was about showing who we are when we come together with purpose. Every boat raced with heart, and every athlete pushed the standard higher. The growth we've seen since the start of the year - -technically, physically and mentally - -is inspiring, and this performance sets the tone for the work ahead as we gear up for the spring."
The Head of the Lake was the final event of the fall season for the Huskies, who will train through the winter for the 2026 season. The 125th annual Class Day Regatta, which will open the spring slate, is scheduled for March 21, 2026.Washington Women's Lineups
