Huskies Sweep Hoosiers In Big Ten Opener
September 27, 2024 | Volleyball
SEATTLE – It was the first match in a new conference but the result was classic Husky Volleyball, as Washington moved to 1-0 in Big Ten play and 11-0 on the season with a sweep of visiting Indiana. The Dawgs hit efficiently at .337 and had 10 big blocks to beat the Hoosiers (7-4, 0-1 Big Ten) to the tune of 25-18, 25-20, 25-18 in front of 2,996 fans at Alaska Airlines Arena.
The Dawgs held Indiana to .149 hitting, thanks in large part to the 10 team blocks. UW only reached 10 blocks in six matches in 2023, but this year the Huskies have reached double digits in eight of 11 matches. Freshman Julia Hunt had five blocks and Emoni Bush had four, including consecutive rejections late in set three to help the Huskies close out the sweep.
Molly Wilson had the Husky offense in rhythm with 25 assists and nine digs. All three of UW's pin hitters hit over .300. Bush had 11 kills and hit .310, Audra Wilmes had nine kills and hit .348, and Madi Endsley had eight kills and hit .318. Out of the middle, Hunt and Katy Wessels each provided six kills. Senior Lauren Bays had a dozen digs.
"It was exciting to get this game underway, it's something that's been talked about for so long so to finally be in conference it was a big night," said Head Coach Leslie Gabriel. "I was proud of how we played tonight; we played hard and we played tough."
"We knew Indiana was a good receiving team so we talked about serving tough tonight … and we did a good job of keeping their setter off the net who is an active setter. I commend our servers for doing that. We also wanted to slow down their pins and I thought our blockers did a good job getting touches to slow them down. All in all I thought we did a good job with our gameplan."
Up Next: Washington will be right back in action tomorrow night with another 7 p.m. start against a tough Illinois squad in Alaska Airlines Arena. The match will be streamed on Big Ten Plus.
