Four UW Alumni Open Olympics Competition On Day One
July 27, 2024 | Men's Rowing
PARIS â Four Washington Rowing alumni got their Olympic competition underway Saturday morning in Paris, with Simon van Dorp, Ben Davison, and Tabea Schendekehl all moving through directly to the next level.
Â
Dutchman van Dorp, the top seed in the large men's single sculls field, turned in the fastest time of the day over the six heats, earning a quarterfinal berth with a win in 6:49.93. He'll next race in a quarterfinal on Tuesday.
Â
Davison and his American double sculls partner took their heat, earning a direct trip to the A/B semifinals and avoiding the repechage.
Â
Schendekehl and her German quad skulls crew finished second in their heat, earning a direct path to the A final. In that same heat, former fellow teammate Teal Cohen and her USA quad finished fourth. That quad will be required to race in a repechage on Monday to remain in contention for a medal.
Â
Three more Huskies begin Olympic competition in races on Sunday. Jessica Thoennes (USA women's pair), Logan Ullrich (New Zealand men's four) and Phoebe Spoors (New Zealand women's four) will all compete in heats. See schedule below.
