June 26, 2024 | General, Washington Athletics Staff Central
Corey Jahlas has been named interim director of athletic bands at the University of Washington, director of athletics Pat Chun announced today.
ย
Jahlas, who is currently nearing the completion of Doctor of Musical Arts degree from the UW, takes over for Dr. Brad McDavid, who retired from the position after 30 years in the role. He spent the last year as McDavid's interim associate director of athletic bands, working with the Husky Marching Band throughout the 2023-24 school year.
ย
"I am so excited to be passing the baton to Corey," said McDavid. "The Husky Band family is thrilled with his selection, and we are all looking forward to the leadership, creativity, and musicianship that Corey will bring to the role. He's an excellent choice to carry on the history and tradition of our proud athletic band program."
"This position is an absolute dream of mine," Jahlas said. "I love the Husky Marching Band and I am so excited to return to the program in this capacity. Dr. McDavid leaves very big shoes to fill, and I'm grateful for the opportunity to continue his legacy as the University of Washington transitions into the Big Ten conference. The Husky Marching Band and UW Athletics has an amazing community around it, and I feel blessed to be able to surround myself with such wonderful people moving forward into this next year. Go Dawgs!"
ย
Jahlas' contract will run from July 1, 2024, through June, 30, 2025. A search to fill the role on a permanent basis will commence in the fall.
ย
Jahlas earned bachelor's degrees in music education and music theory and composition (both summa cum laude) from Central Michigan University, in 2013, before earning a master's in music from CMU in 2019. He's currently working on his doctorate in wind conducting at UW.
ย
His extensive and wide-ranging experience includes serving as director of the wind ensemble at Seattle Pacific, alongside his role with the UW athletic band program. He was also a graduate teaching assistant at UW from 2019 to 2023, working with the Husky Marching Band, the UW's concert and campus bands, and the UW wind ensemble. He also taught courses for music education majors in marching band techniques and low brass techniques.
ย
Prior to moving to Seattle, Jahlas held a number of roles at his alma mater, Central Michigan, where he was a graduate assistant with the Chippewa Marching Band while earning his master's degree. He also worked with the Symphony Band, University Band and Wind Ensemble at CMU, while teaching courses in beginning and advanced conducting, and in instrumental classroom and rehearsal methods. Jahlas is also an in-demand arranger, clinician, adjudicator, and drill designer for high school and collegiate marching bands across the country. In addition to his work at CMU, Jahlas previously worked with a number of high school and middle school band programs in Michigan. His résumé also includes a long list of honors and affiliations.
