EUGENE, Ore. – Nathan Green and Joe Waskom both placed in the top-seven at the U.S. Olympic Trials today at Hayward Field, each running the fastest times of their careers in the 1,500-meter final. Green took fifth and Waskom was seventh, coming up just a couple places shy of qualifying for the Paris Olympics.
In the fastest Olympic Trials final in U.S. history, both of the Husky NCAA Champs ran under the Olympic Standard for the first time in their careers.
Green was the top collegiate finisher in the Trials in fifth in 3:32.20, breaking his own School Record that he set just two days ago by more than two seconds. Waskom was seventh in 3:33.74, the fastest time of his life as well.
Green also climbs to No. 7 on the NCAA all-dates list that includes marks run by a collegiate at any point in the calendar year. The time is significantly faster than the official in-season collegiate record of 3:33.74.
Cole Hocker got the victory in a Meet Record 3:30.59. Third-place, the final Olympic spot, went to Hobbs Kessler in 3:31.53, so Green was just 0.67 seconds away today.
The grueling past couple weeks have seen Green and Waskom run five different 1,500-meter races at Hayward Field, from the NCAA Outdoor semifinals on June 5 to the finals on June 7, and then three more runs over the past four days at the Trials.
Also in action today was 2023 grad Kayley DeLay in the first round/semifinal of the steeplechase. DeLay took seventh in her heat in 9:31.04 and that was good for a time qualifier into the final as it was the 11th-fastest time overall. DeLay will race in the final on Thursday night.
