Andy Powell Wins Second-Straight Coach Of The Year
May 17, 2024 | Track & Field
SEATTLE – Having led the Husky men's track and field team to the championship in the final Pac-12 track meet last weekend, Andy Powell was named the Pac-12 Men's Track & Field Coach of the Year today. Powell wins the honor for the second year in a row, as UW won the final two Pac-12 team titles after never having won the meet up until last season.
Powell is the first Husky track coach to win Pac-12 Coach of the Year multiple times. Washington defended its conference title last week in Boulder, Colo. in the final installment of the storied championship. The Huskies scored 150 points to hold off USC (141 points) and California (95 points).
UW nearly matched its winning point total from 2023 when the Dawgs scored 151 for their first Pac-12 title. Washington had three individual champions this season, compared to seven in 2023, showing that UW's depth in individuals placing second through eighth was the difference maker this time.
Looking at Powell's coaching work in the distance events, in 2023 the Huskies historically won every race from 800m up to 10,000m. This year the Dawgs only won the steeplechase (Joe Waskom) but the point total from the distance runners still increased, from 63 points in 2023 to 69 points this year.
Powell oversaw a steady rise to the top of the Pac-12 pecking order. Prior to Powell taking leadership, the Huskies were 8th at the 2018 Pac-12 meet. In his first season in 2019, the Huskies moved up to fourth. The next time the meet was held, in 2021, the Dawgs climbed to third, and they were runner-up in 2022 before getting the historic back-to-back wins in 2023 and 2024.
Next week Washington will head to Fayetteville, Ark. for the NCAA West Prelims with a total of 39 entries competing to advance to the NCAA Outdoor Championships.
