
UW Closes Opening Weekend With 8-4 Win

PUERTO VALLARTA, Mexico – No. 7 Washington moved to 3-1 on the season following an 8-4 win over Iowa State on Saturday night to close out the Puerto Vallarta College Challenge.
Lindsay Lopez (1-0) picked up the win after going five innings with an earned run and four strikeouts. Ruby Meylan (1) earned the save with a pair of strikeouts.
Brooklyn Carter led off the game with a single and stole second and third to move into scoring position. Jillian Celis followed with second hit of the weekend to give the Huskies the 1-0 advantage.
Carter added her third stolen base of the contest in the fifth, marking the second time in her career with three steals in a game. The previous coming against Michigan State on March 3, 2023. She added another in the seventh to set a new career-high at four.
The Huskies added an insurance run in the fifth after a two-out single by Rylee Holtorf who then advanced to second on a wild pitch. Sydney Stewart brought her in on a single out to left.
Iowa State cut the lead to one on a leadoff home run out to right in the bottom of the inning.
Washington answered right back bringing across six runs in the sixth highlighted by a solo home run by Alana Johnson and two-run homer for Kinsey Fiedler.
The Cyclones weren't done yet, bringing across three runs of their own to make it an 8-4 ballgame heading into the seventh.
All Washington batters reached base during the game. Carter and Holtorf lead the team with three hits while Sydney Stewart, Avery Hobson and Fiedler tallied two each.
Jadyn Glab and Meylan were named to the All-Tournament team following the game.
Up next, the Huskies head to Clearwater, Fla. for the Shiners Children's Clearwater Invitational Presented by EvoShield. Action begins on Friday with a pair of games against Kentucky (6:30 a.m. PT) and Minnesota (9:30 a.m. PT). Washington will also face Wisconsin, LSU and North Carolina on the weekend.
